Der US-amerikanische Softwarekonzern Microsoft stellt für MSDN- und TechNet-Abonnenten ab sofort das Windows 8.1 Update und Windows Server 2012 R2 Update zum Download zur Verfügung. Für Windows 8.1 stehen mit “Windows 8.1 Update, Windows 8.1 with Update und Windows 8.1 Enterprise with Update” drei Pakete zum Download bereit. Für Windows Server 2012 R2 sind es mit “Windows Server 2012 R2 Update und Windows Server 2012 R2 with Update” nur zwei. Damit haben MSDN- und TechNet-Abonnenten die Möglichkeit, das Windows 8.1 Update und Windows Server 2012 R2 Update vor dem offiziellen Marktstart am 08. April 2014 herunterzuladen. Das Windows 8.1 Update und Windows Server 2012 R2 Update ist in vielen Sprachen erhältlich, darunter auch auf Deutsch. Die Windows 8.1 Update und Windows Server 2012 R2 Update als ISO Datei ist dagegen nur auf Englisch erhältlich. Windows 8.1 und Windows Server 2012 R2 von einem ISO-Image installieren
Unter Windows 7 lässt sich eine ISO-Datei mit dem Windows-Brenner für Datenträgerabbilder in eine DVD konvertieren. Auf Windows Vista oder Windows XP PCs ist ein Drittanbieter-Programm erforderlich, um eine ISO-Datei in ein installierbares Medium zu konvertieren. Eine Möglichkeit ist das USB/DVD-Downloadtool.
